Engi-Tech has professionals and experts in the design and development of soft actuators. These include EAP (Electroactive Polymers), Electro/Magneto Rheological Fluids (ERF & MRF), IPMC, shape memory materials and Piezoelectric actuators.

A diverse range of knowledge and experiences in active materials resulted in introducing a novel modular wearable/soft actuator (AcTex-I). This textile interwoven hybrid actuator is structured in a way in which its stiffness can be changed through application of an electrical power. The power can be obtained from an external source such as a rechargeable battery or a car battery. The stiffness of the fabric can be fully controlled via a computer control software.

Example applications of this wearable actuator includes: adjustable and controlled: shock absorbing; damping; vibration; impact; Exoskeleton for various joints of the body such as the neck, wrist, ankle, elbow, and fingers. Dual functionality (i.e. sensing and actuation) aspect of these hybrid actuators are currently under development by Engi-Tech's experts.

R&D professionals at Engi-Tech have recently invented a new type of soft modular mini-actuator (AcTex-II) that is powered by VDC (5 watts). Through initial in-house experimentations, this actuator has shown higher reliability and durability performance against the so far introduced smart actuators. Other issues such as ease of implementation, higher bandwidth, higher force and lower cost have been considered in designing AcTex-II.

Engi-Tech is now seeking collaborators from private and public sectors to further develop this patent pending actuator and its control system. This actuator can be integrated into existing garments or clothes such as gloves and can be used as a wearable rehabilitation or assistive device.

Engi-Tech has so far introduced a part of the above AcTex technologies to military, sport and medical sectors (e.g. a neck protection device). Wearable exoskeleton systems applicable for medical rehabilitation systems and a Future Soldier's smart clothing are some of the key areas in focus.
